[TELEVISION] The Mandalorian

This is the Way. – The Mandalorian

“Not another Star Wars show?” was all I could think of when The Mandalorian aired. To be honest, I was not expecting anything good or exciting from this programme. The Star Wars universe has seen a huge expansion (pun intended) since its first sequel trilogy starring Kylo Ren and Rey (which came to an end, I hope in 2019). Since then, a worthy number of films and television series have been announced as if to milk more money. But after watching the first two episodes, I admit that I am wrong. Like the Force, The Mandalorian pulls me in.

Set five years after Return of the Jedi, this television series is about Din Djarin, a Mandalorian and his adventures with The Child — fondly known by many as Baby Yoda — who is later revealed as a Foundling at the Jedi Temple before the Order 66 events. Initially tasked to capture The Child, Din later grows attached to the kid and decides to protect it from Moff Gideon — a leader of a group of fallen Galactic Empire soldiers — who plans on having The Child for evil purposes.

I am a huge Star Wars fan (The Empire Strikes Back is my personal favourite) and I love the action in the films, the different planets and alien friends and foes we meet along the way, and of course the lightsaber fights. But there was something different in this 2019’s Disney Plus production that lured me to watch on. Not quite sure what it is but perhaps it’s because it is one of the most healthy father-son relationship in the Star Wars universe (cues Ben Solo and Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker LOL). Also, recurring characters also made the show more happening and the show didn’t felt as predictable unlike the animated series Clone Wars.

It doesn’t really matter whether you have watched Star Wars or not; this show is pretty simple to catch so long as you know it is set after Darth Vader’s fall in case you find yourself asking “where is Darth Vader going to appear?”. For fans, I am guessing that we have to wait till 2022 for season 3 to be released. Until then, may the Force be with you.

Rating: 2 out of 3.
